As surreal as it would've been to see the first plane flying into the WTC, the second crash must've been so much worse to witness. Not only do you have the horror of knowing everyone in that tower and the plane are basically doomed, there's also the dread they must've experienced hearing the plane. Hello, I wanted to talk to you here about a great man, who some consider to be the luckiest in the world. You guessed it, here we are going to talk about the great story of Larry Silverstein and his (unfortunately) disappeared towers The twin towers of the WTC, inaugurated in 1973, belonged to the city of New York until July 24, 2001. In fact, to reduce expenses, the mayor launched a call for tenders to sell the buildings. Larry makes a $3.2 billion bid which he wins, and potentially becomes the new owner of the towers 7 weeks before September 11 You should know that the WTC was a financial sinkhole, and this is the first time that the complex has changed direction in 30 years. Because of its age and rising energy prices, keeping buildings cool in summer and warm in winter cost a fortune to maintain, compared to recent buildings. To keep the WTC in the category of class A office space, the must and most expensive to rent, it would have been necessary to spend more than $800 million on electrical cables, electronic systems and air conditioning. But what repelled potential buyers was of course the level of asbestos present in the towers (400 tonnes). The buildings having been designed at a time when asbestos was authorized, it was now necessary to remove asbestos from the towers. Asbestos replacements therefore began in the 1990s, financed by the New York Port Authority. In December, this same authority estimated the end of the work at a cost of nearly $1 billion.
